Abstract

The hanging drop electrode devised in this laboratory is an improvement over those used elsewhere by workers in the field of polarography and electrode kinetics. The technique ‘vibrated dropping mercury electrode’ can be developed as a new form of polarography of greater sensitivity. The revolutionary concept of a ‘double layer slow relaxation process’ involving oriented water dipoles at interphases is capable of explaining a number of electrochemical and biological phenomena. The investigation of the effects of superimposed alternating voltages and transverse alternating fields on polarographic reduction processes brings out the important part played by electro capillary phoresis. A further detailed examination of the effects of alternating voltage on processes at interphases with a view of a better understanding of the structure of the double layer is indicated. Investigation of adsorption-desorption processes helps in gaining more knowledge of the structure of the double layer. Specific adsorption of ions plays an important part, in that this process introduces a factor ‘anti-capacitance’, in terms of which differential capacity curves can be interpreted more clearly. The tensammetric method of analysis, a simple technique for rapid and extensive investigation of adsorption-desorption processes, shows that organic substances like thiourea are adsorbed in a manner similar to anions
