Abstract

The electro capillary behaviour of Hg/radioactive aqueous H2SO4 or Na2SO4 solution interface and that of Hg/non-radioactive aqueous H2SO4 or Na2SO4 solution are found to be appreciably different from each other. In fact the β-radioactivity of the S35 labeled H2SO4 or Na2SO4 solutions are found to alter quantitatively the charge conditions on the mercury surface, giving rise to appreciable changes in the electro sorption characteristics of organic adsorbates like thiourea over mercury is more and that of benzotriazole is less from radioactive H2SO4 and Na2SO4 solutions than from the corresponding non-radioactive counterparts. The relationships between different thermodynamic parameters have been arrived at. The graphical and a new computerized assignment of adsorption isotherms like Langmuir modified Longmuir, Frumkin and logarithmic Tumkin to the adsorption of thiourea and benzotriazole at both Hg/radioactive and Hg/non-radioactive base electrolyte interfaces are dealt with. Beta-radioactivity is found to alter quantitatively the free energy of adsorption, interaction parameters, charge on the metal and the partial coverage, though the same isotherm is found to be followed during adsorption of thiourea and benzotriazole from radioactive and non-radioactive base electrolytes. The capillary thermodynamics of the different systems studied based on Persons and Devanathan approach and on the basis of experimental data collected during the course of the work are given. Lippmann’s capillary equation was derived in each case. A critical analysis of the previous double layer models and the most recent models of Rengarajan et al is given. The 2-state site parity model of Rengarajan et al has been proposed to describe the structure of double layer in all the systems studied in this work, based on different double layer structural parameters like qM, θ, ∆G etc. This model is found to describe adequately the molecular picture that is most probably present at the different interfaces investigated in the course of the work. To an appreciable extent the model proposed in this study is found to bring about in a quantitative manner the effect of beta radiation on the structure of the double layer in the presence and absence of the organic adsorbates like thiourea and benzotrazole at Hg/aqueous electrolyte interface
