Abstract

Lithium cells find wide applications in many of the miniature electronic gadgets. Since lithium reacts with water, non-aqueous aprotic solvents are used in these cells. Electrolytes with large cations are dissolved in them to improve the conductivity. Manganese dioxide is used as a cathode material in many batteries with aqueous solutions. It is also used in lithium non-aqueous cells. Manganese dioxide exists in several crystalline modifications. It contains occluded water also. There are different varieties of manganese dioxide like natural ore, chemical manganese dioxide (CMD), and electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). We have studied the effect of heating the electrolytic manganese dioxide obtained from the Indian ore on Li/MnO2 button cell performance. Portions of EMD were heated to different temperatures. Dry boxes for carrying out distillation, solution preparation and cell fabrication were fabricated. Electrolyte solutions of LiClO4 in Propylene Carbonate of different concentrations were prepared. Propylene carbonate and dimethoxyethane mixed solvents were also prepared. Cells with lithium as anode and the various EMD samples as cathode material with different concentrations of electrolyte solution were prepared. These cells were discharged at 50 µA and in certain case at 100 µA and 200 µA. Internal resistance of these cells were calculated from the I-E plots. A.C. impedance response measurements of these cells were carried out at different temperatures. Sluyter’s plots were constructed and the solution resistance, charge transfer resistance, exchanges current density, double layer capacitance and energy of activation were calculated. Based on the above results, one particular EMD sample and one PC/LiClO4 concentration were selected and cells were fabricated with this composition. State of charge tests by impedance technique were conducted for these cells
