Abstract

The improved performance and electrodeposition behaviour of platinum baths containing [Pt(NH3)3(N02)](N02) and [Pt(NH3)4](X) (X=2CIP, 2N03- and 2N02-) complex species in phosphate buffer onto titanium is described. The cathode efficiency for each bath has been determined and compared. Structures of the deposited coatings were evaluated and discussed with the aid of SEM and XRD. The role of counter anions (X) coupled with pH was investigated. The study showed that electrolytes with X=N02 exhibited higher plating efficiency in the pH range 10.4-10.6 containing phosphate buffer, demonstrating the selectivity for specific counter anions and pH range. The current efficiency of this system is much higher than that of the bath based on Pt-P salt.
