Abstract

Aliphatic polyurethane coatings are well know for their extremely good weather resistance. However the cost of the imported raw materials make them for selective use in controlling marine and industrial corrosion of steel structures. In this present study an attempt is made to develop a coating material with good weather resistance as well as corrosion resistance. An epoxy resin cured with different ratios of aliphatic polyisocyanate was evaluated for its weather and corrosion resistance nature by conventional methods. The developed resin system was used to formulate a paint i.e. top coat and its performance was compared with the conventional epoxy polyamide paint and a conventional polyurethane paint. It was concluded that by reacting epoxy resin with aliphatic isocyanate one can get a cost effective, better performing top coat, which can be a good replacement for conventional aliphatic polyurethane top coats.
