Abstract
Ni-Mn alloys were electrodeposited on stainless steel substrates from simple sulphate baths with ammonium sulphate as the additive. The influence of Ni/Mn metal ratio (in the bath) on microstructure of the coatings was investigated with colour polarisation optical microscopy. The most homogeneous and textured deposit was obtained with a Ni/Mn metal ratio of 0.67. Ni/Mn metal ratio of above 6.0 introduced surface roughness in the coating. Multiphase deposits were obtained with a Ni/Mn metal ratio in the range 1.0 to 3.0. Monophase deposits could be plated only from baths with a Ni/Mn metal ratio of 0.67 to 0.93. In three cases, unique microstructures were observed
