Abstract
The increase in cell voltage of Mg±CuI seawater activated batteries effected by sulphur addition is strongly influenced by the kind of sulphur allotrope used for the purpose. Cyclohexasulphur (S6), cyclooctasulphur (S8), and cyclododecasulphur (S12) were evaluated for the benevolence vis-a-vis that of commercial grade sulphur. Sulphur participates in the electrochemical reaction, the elevation in cell voltage being in the order of reactivity of the allotropes: S6 > S12 > S8> commercial grade sulphur. Battery performance results are discussed in the light of UV, IR and EPR spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurements.
